Your building

A building with character no new tower can give you.

Your team walks through private gates into a Victorian school with ceilings over four metres and windows on every side. It has the volume, light and story that make people proud to bring visitors here.

A whole plot to yourself, in the middle of Shoreditch.

The site holds a striking Victorian school, a later building joined to it, and a small period building on the corner of New Inn Street. Together they sit on 0.19 hectares bounded by Curtain Road, Bateman's Row and New Inn Street, with entrances from all three.

The building is not listed and benefits from a certificate of immunity from listing, which gives real freedom to adapt it for a modern headquarters while respecting its character.

History

A story your team will tell visitors.

  1. 1577

    The Curtain Theatre

James Burbage built the Curtain Theatre just behind the site, near New Inn Yard. Shakespeare's company performed here before the Globe, and some of the earliest performances of Romeo and Juliet and Henry V took place on its stage. The street takes its name from it.

  2. 19th c.

    An almshouse, then a school

The site began as a Victorian almshouse, a charitable home for the poor, before it was replaced by the Shoreditch Girls' Technical School, on a street then famous for its furniture trade.

  3. 20th c.

    London College of Fashion

The building became one of the homes of the London College of Fashion, part of the University of the Arts London, teaching textiles, millinery and garment design.

  4. 2023

    A new chapter

The college moved to its new campus at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, leaving the building vacant and ready for its next life.

  5. 2028

    A headquarters

Restored and extended for a single occupier, with practical completion targeted for the second quarter of 2028.
