The name
Curtain Road takes its name from the Curtain Theatre, built by James Burbage in 1577 just behind the site. It was home to Shakespeare's company before the Globe, and archaeologists from the Museum of London uncovered its remains between 2011 and 2016. They are now part of The Stage, a few minutes away.
